Negative Impacts:

• Energy Costs: Laser cutters, particularly high-powered ones, use a substantial amount of electricity which can result in increased carbon emissions if the power supply is non-renewable.
• Hazardous Emissions: Cutting some materials, especially plastics and PVC, releases noxious fumes and particulate matter that may affect air quality and pose health risks if proper filters are not utilized.
• Water Consumption: Some processes use water for cooling purposes.

Positive Impacts:

• Reduced Material Waste: Compared to traditional cutting methods, laser cutting is highly precise which minimizes material waste.
• No Tool Wear: Unlike mechanical cutting, tools are lasers do not wear down, leading to savings from infrequent tool replacements and reduced waste.
• Increased Efficiency: Fiber lasers, in particular, are more energy efficient than older technologies.

Mitigation Strategies:

• Change the power supply to the machines to renewable energy sources.
• Install adequate suction and filtration systems to control air pollutants.
• Use materials that result in fewer harmful byproducts when the material is cut.

• PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride, as it is formally known, gaseous byproducts of its combustion or degradation can include, Chlorine, which is hazardous to health and poses a threat to the machine as it can corrode parts of it.
• ABS is also known as Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene and its fumes contain cyanide gas. Its cutting method is most likely through melting instead of being cleanly cut.
• Polarizable film has poor cutting outcome when it has been thicker than 0.5mm, as it causes discoloration and even fire.
• Fiberglass is categorized as toxic due to the smoke that is released when it is heated. In addition, cutting the material can be complex due to the mixture framing its construction.
• Epoxy resins poorly cut materials while simultaneously emitting gases that are dangerous to one’s health.
• Common HDPE or High-Density Polyethylene is known to melt when placed under heat creating a mess which deems most laser cutters unsuitable as it would hinder their efficiency.
• Polystyrene foam is useful in construction as it is light in weight but due to its chemical nature, the foam is highly flammable causing fires when exposed to laser beams.
• Coated carbon fiber is considered as hazardous due to the gases that are released when cutting the material, making it difficult to cut.

• Plywood and wood: Up to 10 mm.
• Plastic and acrylic: Approximately 20 mm, (up to 0.7 inches) .
• Fabric and leather: Best suited for thinner fabrics; might be more difficult with thick leather.
• Cardboard and paper: Best used at a maximum thickness of 2 mm.
• Other types of non-metals (e.g. glass, rubber): 10 mm max.

• Low capabilities/efforts lasers (40W-60W): Used for cutting thin pieces of wood up to 3-5 mm in thickness. These lasers are frequently found in small-scale and hobbyist contexts.
• Medium Laser Power (80W-100W): Capable of cutting wood with a thickness up to 10 mm. These lasers are ideal for demanding projects or professional work.
• High-Powered Laser (150W and above): These lasers can cleanly cut thicker pieces of wood (20 mm or more). Such equipment is mostly found in industrial environments.

• Softwoods: A thickness of 3-5 mm.
• Hardwoods: Maximum thickness of 2-3 mm depending on the density.
• Plywood: Usually does not exceed 3 mm, although this may differ owing to the number of adhesive layers present in the plywood.

• Carbon Steel: Max 10mm.
• Stainless Stal: Maximum 5mm.
• Aluminum: Maximum 3mm.
• Copper and Brass: Maximum 3mm.
• Plastics, woods, and composites – Non-metals: Usually up to 3mm.

• Carbon Steel: Thickness up to 25 mm.
• Stainless Steel: From 10 to 15 mm.
• Copper and Brass: Not exceeding 5 mm.
• Aluminum: Thickness ranging from 8 to 12 mm.

CO2 Laser (e.g., Epilog Fusion Pro):

Can cut organic materials such as wood, plastics, and other acrylics up to ¾ inch (19 mm)

Fiber Laser (e.g., JPT MOPA 200W):

Best suited for deep engraving and cutting metals, stainless steel, and even titanium.

Great for industrial metals, thick materials along with some metals for color marking.
