The headbox, at the start the of the machine, is important for ensuring that the pulp slurry (stock) is distributed uniformly across the moving wire. The slurry usually has a fiber consistency of around 0.2–1.0%. The turbulence that the headbox generates minimizes fiber clumping (flocculation), and the flow and speed of the slurry is controlled by the slice opening.
